Analysis: The Washington Post: Black Sea Watershed

In weeks and years past, each of us has argued on this page that Moscow was pursuing a policy of regime change toward Georgia and its pro-Western, democratically elected president, Mikheil Saakashvili.

URGENT: Russian Ground Forces Invade Georgia, Georgian Army Retreats to Defend Capital; Government Appeals for Urgent International Intervention

At this hour, the invading army of the Russian Federation has entered Georgian territory outside the conflict zones of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Georgian army is retreating to defend the capital. The Government is urgently seeking international intervention to prevent the fall of Georgia and the further loss of life.


Statement: STATEMENT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF GEORGIA

Russian occupation forces have already gone beyond the conflict zone. Until recently Russia limited itself to aerial assaults outside of the boundaries of the conflict zone, however, now the Russian forces are attempting to seize the control of entire Georgia.  Russian regular army is located in Zugdidi, Khobi and Senaki. Also, numerous Russian troops moved beyond Tskhinvali region, blocked the major highway and headed towards the capital of Georgia (Tbilisi).
